Squamous Cell Carcinoma

carcinoma,basal cell carcinoma

Squamous cell carcinoma is also known as 'SCC'. Instances of people falling prey to squamous cell carcinoma are next to those affected by 'Basal cell carcinoma' or 'BCC'. Squamous cell carcinoma is akin to the squamous cells that constitute the outer portions of our skin. Therefore, the squamous cell carcinoma first afflicts the epidermis. Squamous cell carcinoma can influence the mucous membranes besides the portions of our bodies which remain chronically exposed to sunlight.

If squamous cell carcinoma is not treated at the initial stages, it may permeate the tissues that lie beneath as well. There are also reports of squamous cell carcinoma stretching out (metastasize) to organs and tissues that are located elsewhere within the body. Squamous cell carcinoma at such times may turn quite fatal. Such cases of Squamous cell carcinoma metastasizing are often traced to the lips, the mucous membranes or the portions that have chronic inflammatory skin complaints.

The causes of squamous cell carcinoma are many. One of them is the long-term exposure to sunlight. Squamous cell carcinoma can happen in portions which may have suffered injuries or burns. The lower lip and the ear rim are also vulnerable to squamous cell carcinoma.
