Renal Cell Carcinoma

Renal cell carcinoma is also known as kidney cancer. There are mainly five forms of renal cell carcinoma. They are recognized and classified as such by microscopically examining the tumor. The different types of renal cell carcinoma are 'Unclassified', Clear cell, Chromophobe, Collecting duct, and Papillary.

About six per cent of the renal cell carcinomas are 'unclassified' as they do not fall within the other categories. On the other hand, approximately 85 per cent of the renal cell carcinomas fall within the 'Clear cell' type -- the most common form of renal cell carcinoma - here, the cells appear to be clear or pale.

Renal cell carcinoma accounts for more than 95 per cent of the kidney tumors which are malignant by nature. Hence, renal cell carcinoma is the most common form of kidney cancer. Renal cell carcinoma begins as one unit or mass inside the kidney. Renal cell carcinomas are noticeable only after they grow in size. However, the majority among such renal cell carcinomas are pinpointed as to their location, shapes and sizes prior to their stretching (metastasizing) to other organs via the lymph vessels or the bloodstream. Renal cell carcinomas can be dangerous once they thus spread out.
